This course on Jewish Medical Ethics considers how modern medical dilemmas can be ethically resolved through thoughtful analysis of analogous cases that appear in the classical Jewish legal literature. By studying the underpinnings of the system of Jewish medical ethics, medical health professionals will deepen their own understanding of modern medical quandaries. Such knowledge will contribute to a better understanding of religious patients and more sensitivity to their concerns. In addition, this course will help the physician to understand the kind of medical information needed by rabbis and Jewish clergy who wish to advise their patients on matter of Jewish medical ethics. We also expect this course will help medical professional develop greater sensitivity to how cultural norms affect patients’ interactions with the health care system so that they may better attend to patients of all religious and cultural backgrounds.
