The Da Vinci Code: A Jewish Perspective

Close to 60 people gathered in Brisbane Synagogue on Sunday evening, 17 June for a most interesting and enlightening talk by the highly acclaimed Rabbi Michael Skobac of Jews for Judaism in Toronto.  The evening was jointly sponsored by the Brisbane Hebrew Congregation and the Jewish Educational Institute of Chabad Brisbane.

Addressing the topic “The Da Vinci Code: A Jewish Perspective,” Rabbi Skobac unraveled fact and fiction to show that indeed, there is a story that has been obscured - but one much more interesting than the one proposed by Dan Brown.  He explained how this publication was received by the public at large, how over 60.5 million copies printed and how a multitude of writers and publishers jumped on the bandwagen brought out over ten books relating to the subject and indeed any product that used the words 'Da Vinci' became a best-seller. The Church however, was not amused and responded by pronouncing what amounted to an 'anathema' on the book. What is astonoshing is the fact that the novel has no merit at all as a literary work. The author failes to develop the normal features of a character, it is very hard to come to grips with the theme. That is has created such a furor, such a rage, verges on the miraculous.

What is indeed a miracle about this publication, Skobac explained, is that it has given rise to countless questions. It has opened the flood gates for the nations, to doubt their beliefs, and a multitude of people around the world have surged to Judaism, in search of plausable answers. The Da Vinci Code phenomenon is providential inasmuch as it emerges at an opportune time, as we are on the heels of the advent of the Moshiach (Messiah). It has been prophesized that in this historic Messianic time, more and more people will wake up and seek the true knowledge of G‑d.

Rabbi Skobac explored for us the facts about Judaism as opposed to other denominations, and he dwelt on the serious threat from the Missionaries who are armed with considerable funds and carefully plotted strategies, to alienate our people from their faith. This is tantamount to the soul snatching activities, as well as the proliferation of sects and cults, actively and aggressively engaged in recruiting unweary victims. On the credit side of equation many are seeking conversion to the Judaism. Many are encouraged to follow the true path by following the Noahide laws rather than conversion. Many Noahide groups (www.Noahide.org) and virtual-congregations have been established and are growing at a rapid pace.

The evening concluded by Rabbi Skobac encouraging us to study and learn about our heritage, thereby enabling us to respond appropriately. As he feels that the time is coming closer when the world around us will question the Jews as to the true meaning of G‑d’s word.

The talk was followed by a question and answer session, where Rabbi Skobac so eloquently and patiently responded to queries from the audience.

Many in attendance walked away, moved, motivated, and encouraged to study more about their heritage and appreciate their Jewishness.
